Baum mitten in der Welt

Kremsmünster, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The ‘Baum mitten in der Welt’ (the tree in the middle of the world) is located on the Gustermairberg. In 1823, under Emperor Franz I, the site was the origin of the Austrian cadastral survey where an old, mighty lime tree stood until 1929. This tree was the inspiration for the cherry tree in Adalbert Stifter’s Indian Summer from which the inhabitants of the Rose House viewed their possessions. A new lime tree was planted in 1916. From the Baum mitten in der Welt, you get a view from the Alps over the Berchtesgadener Land to the Bohemian border.
