HUSKIES Wels - American Football

The HUSKIES Wels were founded in 2017 and can already look back on a very successful club history. By winning the Challenge Bowl 2022, the club moved up from Division IV to Division II of the Austrian Football League.

FROM 0 TO 2000

It took just under a month from the initial idea of six youngsters to play football in February 2017 until the club was founded on 30 March 2017 .
Just two weeks later, on 15 April, they were invited by the Steelsharks Traun to take part in a joint venture with them in the 9-man football U15 and U17 junior divisions. And so it was clear that these youngsters would take part in the championships in the first year of the club's existence.
From the beginning of May, the 12 young football enthusiasts were coached by a coach from Steelsharks Traun so that they would be ready for the junior championships at the beginning of September. If you look at the results, you can say - with success. Both teams (U15 and U17) made it through to the semi-finals of the play-offs.
Following the successful junior championships, the decision was made to organise a tryout for a competitive team for the first time in September 2017, in which 45 potential footballers took part. By the end of January 2018, the average training attendance had increased from 20 to 28 players. It was therefore decided to enter the league from 2019.
The Huskies Wels have been an official member of the AFBÖ (American Football Federation Austria) since 18 January 2018 . In order to participate in the league, it was necessary to play three qualifying matches in 2018. Two of which had to be played at home.
After discussions with the city of Wels and the Wels home stadium, we were given a new home in the old FC Wels stadium at Sauerbruchstraße 62 on 1 May 2018 and officially handed over on 11 June 2018 .
We can definitely use our new home in Wels up to and including the 2022 season. The Huskies Wels immediately began the necessary renovations with the help of all the players in order to be ready for the first home game on 11 August 2018 . After the successful organisation of the qualifying matches, entry into the Austrian Football League - Division 4 was secured.
In the first season of the still young club history in 2019, the Huskies Wels finished the season in 3rd place in Confernce A of Division 4, with an average attendance of 900.
Due to the COVID - 19 situation, the 2020 season was cancelled.
2022 was the most successful year in the club's young history. The HUSKIES Wels made it to the Division 3 final undefeated. More than 2000 enthusiastic fans were able to support their team for the Challenge Bowl 2022, which the Huskies won and will therefore play in Division 2 of the Austrian Football League from 2023.
