Documents mention the parish church of Wels in the year 888 for the first time. The church was originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist. A change of patronage took place in the 14th century, and since then, the evangelist Johannes has been the patron of the parish church of Wels.
Built as a Romanesque basilica, the church is now mainly Gothic-style, although there are clearly many other styles visible. The sandstone portal in the tower hall dates from the Romantic period. The glass windows are among the masterpieces of gothic artisans.
