The present appearance of the town square developed over the centuries.

In the 12th century, there was a cemetery within the area of the parish church, in the east of the square, which extended even further to the west. The development of the square to its present size probably started in the 13th century.

Today the town square of Wels is in its architectural unity one of the most beautiful squares in Austria. Its houses have mostly charming baroque façades from the 17th and 18th century. The houses themselves are mostly older, which is particularly evident in the backyards, which date back to the Gothic and Renaissance periods.

Since the Middle Ages, the town square has been used to hold markets, which used to be mainly for livestock and agricultural products. Even today, weekly-, Christmas- and antiques-markets are held here.
