The Almtal Bike Path leads you from Wels via Eberstalzell, Pettenbach and Scharnstein through Grünau in the Almtal to the final destination of Lake Alm.

Whilst on the bike path, it is worth paying a museum or sight a visit along the way. For instance, the Schriften- und Druckmuseum (Font and Print Museum) at the Bartlhaus in Pettenback is right next to the railway station. Or the Sensenmuseum Geyerhammer (Scythe Museum), which features three original water-driven metalworking hammers and forges. Here, visitors get insight into the working conditions and practices of the scythe makers by means of live presentations.

After Scharnstein railway station, the path leads along the River Alm and you arrive at the federal road in Grünau in the Almtal. You now bike along the federal road with little traffic to the  Cumberland-Wildpark Grünau. After the Gasthaus Jagersimmerl, you have to hit the pedals one last time to make it up the incline before reaching Lake Alm.

Sections with heavy mechanised traffic are designated by signs: Grünau to Lake Alm

Designation: R11 (Within the network of national bike paths in Upper Austria)

Starting point: Traun Bike Path near Wels / motorway bridge
Destination: Lake Alm

Accessibility / arrival

Whether for arriving or departing or even for transfers along the route of the biking tour, trains are an irreplaceable partner when it comes to biking. With the right information for planning purposes, your next biking tour is quickly brought on track.

You can travel to the Almtal Bike Path by taking a train to Wels or Steinhaus. From there, the "Radwanderweg" leads via the towns of Eberstallzell, Pettenbach and Scharnstein into the inner Almtal to Grünau all the way to Lake Alm. With your gaze fixed on the mountains, the "Radwanderweg" snakes its way over quiet side roads to the foot of the Totes Gebirge.

It is possible to transport bicycles on the trains of the Almtalbahn. The bike path and tracks run parallel to one another (in the urban area of Wels, first on Traun Bike Path No. 4 until the beginning of Almtal Bike Path No. 11) between Wels and Steinhaus, as well as between Pettenbach and Grünau. For groups with reservations, special bicycle cars are added to the train. Reservations can be made on 05/1717. Info: www.ooevv.at
